On the same day, the Jerusalem Post raised the question, “Did Elon Musk Sieg Heil at Trump’s inauguration?” The Israeli newspaper cited local activist and academic Shai Davidai, who stated on Instagram: “I don’t care who you are, doing a Nazi salute is never ok.”
The incident occurred as Musk addressed Trump supporters at the Capital One Arena in Washington, DC. He declared, “This was no ordinary victory. This was a fork in the road of human civilization!” Musk asserted that the November 5 US presidential ballot “really mattered,” unlike some previous elections.
Subsequently, Musk thanked the audience “for making it happen,” placing his right hand over his heart and raising it upward at an angle, palm down and fingers held together. He repeated this gesture as he turned to address the spectators behind him, saying, “My heart goes out to you.”
In the aftermath, various online commentators and media outlets interpreted Musk's gesture as a Nazi salute.
In response to a user's post on X on Tuesday, who claimed the “salute hoax is just another part of the ‘dirty tricks campaign,’” Musk concurred, adding: “frankly, they need better dirty tricks.” He further stated, “The ‘everyone is Hitler’ attack is sooo tired.”
The US-based Anti-Defamation League weighed in on Tuesday, suggesting Musk had “made an awkward gesture in a moment of enthusiasm, not a Nazi salute.” The organization acknowledged that “people are on edge” and encouraged all political sides to “give one another a bit of grace, perhaps even the benefit of the doubt, and take a breath.”
Additionally, some social media users highlighted that other politicians, including Vice President Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and former President Barack Obama, have made similar arm gestures in the past without facing the same level of scrutiny.
Commentators have also speculated that Musk’s stiff and jerky straight-arm gesture may be attributed to Asperger’s syndrome, a condition he has previously acknowledged.
