Mexican leader reacts to Trump's "Gulf of America" suggestion
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to US President-elect Donald Trump’s idea of renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the ‘Gulf of America’.

Sheinbaum proposed that the US adopt a historic designation for the region, suggesting ‘America Mexicana’ or ‘Mexican America’. Her remarks were made during a press briefing on Wednesday, where she stood beside former Culture Secretary Jose Alfonso Suarez del Real in front of a 17th-century world map.

This response came after Trump’s statement earlier in the week, in which he expressed a desire to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, citing its “beautiful ring” and deeming it “appropriate.”

“Why don’t we call it America Mexicana. It sounds pretty, no? Isn’t that true?” Sheinbaum said, while highlighting a 1607 map that depicted an early representation of the territory that now includes the US, Mexico, and part of Canada.

“The fact is that Mexican America is recognized since the 17th century... as the name for the whole northern part of the continent,” Suarez del Real noted, showcasing the area on the European map commissioned for the Amsterdam-based Dutch East India Company in the early 17th century.

In a broader context, Trump’s suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico, which extends from Florida to Cancun, Mexico, was made at a press conference at Mar-a-Lago and is part of an expansionist agenda, which also includes the possibility of claiming Greenland. He mentioned that he would not dismiss military or economic actions to secure the Danish-controlled territory.

Trump expressed skepticism about Denmark's claim to Greenland, suggesting it should be relinquished due to its “absolute necessity” for US national security. He also did not discount using military means to reclaim control of the Panama Canal, asserting that it was built for US military purposes and is “vital to our country.”

Additionally, he repeated threats to impose “very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada,” aimed at addressing illegal border crossings and drug trafficking.

In response to Trump’s potential 25% tariffs on Mexican imports, Sheinbaum previously cautioned that Mexico would retaliate, emphasizing that such measures would not effectively curtail the flow of migrants or drugs to the US but would instead lead to inflation and job losses in both nations.
