Donald Trump is reportedly committed to his proposal for acquiring Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, as reported by Reuters, which cited sources familiar with the president-elect’s views. This initiative aligns with Trump's broader ambitions to enhance America's global influence and establish a significant presidential legacy, according to the outlet.
He has articulated that American control over the Arctic island is critical for national security and has not excluded the possibility of forcibly taking the territory if deemed necessary. Trump initially raised the idea of acquiring Greenland during his prior presidency, characterizing the potential transaction as "a large real estate deal."
Thus far, his proposal has been rejected by the current US administration under President Joe Biden, as well as the EU, Denmark, and the Greenlandic government.
However, Trump's latest comments suggest that his interest is a "deep-rooted ambition" rather than "a fleeting fancy," as reported by Reuters on Thursday.
Sources indicated that Trump views territorial expansion as a way to create a long-lasting legacy, one that would be remembered for generations. The last time the United States expanded its territory was in 1959 when Alaska and Hawaii became the 49th and 50th states under President Dwight Eisenhower.
Additionally, Trump has recently floated the idea of taking control of the Panama Canal and Canada.
While one source mentioned to the agency that the future president is unlikely to resort to military action to claim Greenland, he is serious about potentially employing other strategies, such as diplomatic and economic pressure on Denmark.
Greenland, the largest island globally, resides between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans. It is home to a significant US military base and is strategically positioned on the shortest route from North America to Europe. The island is larger than Mexico but has a population of fewer than 57,000 permanent residents and gained home rule from Denmark in 1979.
The importance of Greenland has increased due to its abundant natural resources, including rare earth minerals. As climate change opens up the Arctic, its potential for resource exploitation and new shipping routes has attracted interest from global powers such as China and Russia.
Moscow is keen on maintaining stability in the Arctic, according to Russia's ambassador to Denmark, Vladimir Barbin, who stated that “an attempt to strengthen US national security at the expense of other countries… will be taken into account by Russia in its military planning.”
Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council and former president, described Trump’s plans as "over the top and eccentric - and totally unworkable."
“There is not going to be a quick solution to the conflict in Ukraine; the US economy will waddle on at a leisurely pace… so instead, Trump has decided to ‘reshape’ the world… to redraw the political map in his own style. A new, vibrant, and colorful globe to replace the dull and gray old one,” Medvedev remarked.
