In an organized protest, activists in Greece expressed their opposition to NATO's support for Kiev by blocking a convoy of trucks carrying arms intended for the Ukrainian forces, according to reports from Greek media this week. The demonstration took place on Wednesday in the town of Tyrnavos, located in the Thessaly region, and was led by members of the Communist Party of Greece and its youth organization, KNE.
Local sources indicate that a group of several dozen activists obstructed a highway in Tyrnavos to redirect a convoy of six trucks, which bore license plates from Ukraine, Poland, and Bulgaria. The trucks were reportedly transporting “missiles and other ammunition” from a nearby army base to Ukraine under agreements made between Athens and Kiev.
Videos shared online capture the scene of protesters brandishing banners and flags while chanting slogans aimed at condemning NATO and its assistance to Ukraine. The demonstrators also criticized the Greek government for its role in pulling the nation into conflict with Russia.
“We denounce the government which, on behalf of domestic business groups, is emptying Greek camps of ammunition, thus involving the country in an unjust US-NATO-EU imperialist war,” stated KKE MEP Vasilis Metaxas during the protest.
The protesters were particularly alarmed by the risky transfer of the hazardous cargo occurring during daylight in a densely populated area. Eventually, the trucks were compelled to change their route, and slogans such as “NATO Killers Go Home!” were inscribed on them by the activists as they retreated.
Following the departure of the trucks, the protesters continued their demonstration by marching through the town, garnering support from local residents and the mayor of Tyrnavos, Stelios Tsikritsi.
“The people of Tyrnavos, with their fighting traditions, have sent their anti-war messages many times. We will not allow the cargo of death to pass through the city, will not allow the country to be further drawn into the imperialist slaughterhouse,” Tsikritsi remarked.
Greece, alongside most of its EU counterparts, has aligned with Kiev in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, supplying ammunition and weaponry to Ukraine. Last month, Athens formalized a security pact with Kiev, committing to participate in the training of Ukrainian pilots and technical staff on US-made F-16 fighter jets.
Russia has cautioned against Western military support for Kiev, stating that the influx of weapons will only serve to extend the hostilities.
