Meta’s Reversal on Inclusion Initiatives Allegedly Targets "Tampons for Males" First – Reports
Meta Platforms, led by Mark Zuckerberg, is undergoing significant changes as it has discontinued its diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs. The impact of these changes, particularly affecting transgender and non-binary employees, is being felt across the company’s offices, including those of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The policy shifts began late Thursday, following an internal memo announcement. According to reports from the New York Times citing two Meta employees, managers in Silicon Valley, Texas, and New York have been directed to remove tampons from men's restrooms—previously provided for transgender and non-binary staff.

In addition, non-binary and transgender themes have been eliminated from Meta's messenger chat application, and access to DEI policies and training materials has been restricted on the company’s internal network.

A reversal of the DEI-oriented hiring process—which had considered racial and gender backgrounds—was first highlighted on Friday by Axios, which obtained the memo from Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources.

“The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” the memo states. “The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others.”

Instead, the company will concentrate on “how to apply fair and consistent practices that mitigate bias for all, no matter your background.”

Earlier in the week, Meta had pledged to “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship.” In a video address, Zuckerberg indicated plans to “get rid of fact checkers and replace them with community notes,” highlighting a shift similar to changes seen at Elon Musk’s X. Zuckerberg acknowledged that the “fact checkers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created,” also revealing that the company’s content moderation teams would relocate from California to Texas to diminish concerns over bias within those teams.
