Meta to Withdraw Tampons from Men's Bathrooms – NYT
Major transformations are underway at Meta Platforms, led by Mark Zuckerberg, as the company has discontinued its diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. The implications for transgender and non-binary employees have reportedly begun to manifest across the offices of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.

The shift in policy was initiated late Thursday following an internal memo announcement. According to the New York Times, managers in Silicon Valley, Texas, and New York have been directed to remove tampons from men’s restrooms—items that were previously provided for the benefit of transgender and non-binary staff, as reported by two Meta employees.

Additionally, it has been reported that non-binary and transgender themes have been stripped from the messenger chat app, and access to diversity, equity, and inclusion policies and training manuals on Meta’s internal network has been restricted.

A reversal of the company's DEI-based hiring procedures—previously influenced by racial and gender backgrounds—was initially highlighted earlier on Friday by Axios, which disclosed the memo sent to employees by Janelle Gale, Meta’s vice president of human resources.

“The legal and policy landscape surrounding diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the United States is changing,” the memo states. “The term ‘DEI’ has also become charged, in part because it is understood by some as a practice that suggests preferential treatment of some groups over others.”

Instead, the company plans to “focus on how to apply fair and consistent practices that mitigate bias for all, no matter your background.”

Earlier this week, Meta also announced its intention to “dramatically reduce the amount of censorship.” In a video message, Zuckerberg committed to “get rid of factcheckers and replace them with community notes,” similar to the approach taken by Elon Musk’s platform, X. He acknowledged that “factcheckers have just been too politically biased and have destroyed more trust than they’ve created,” stating that the company’s content moderation teams would transition from California to Texas “where there is less concern about the bias of our teams.”
