Media Reports: Ukraine Trained Syrian "Terrorists"
According to the Kyiv Post, some Islamist groups that launched attacks in Syria's northern Aleppo province this week received “operational training” from a Special Forces unit of Ukraine's military intelligence service. This information, reported by the Kyiv-based weekly on Sunday, suggests that militant groups operating in Idlib province, which is not under government control, received training from the Khimik Group, an HUR Special Forces unit. The training reportedly emphasized tactics that have evolved during the ongoing conflict with Russia, including drone usage, with the Kyiv Post citing “Islamist social media sites.”

The Khimik Group has allegedly been active in Syria for an extended period. In September, the Ukrainian weekly reported that the unit had successfully attacked a Russian military base on the outskirts of Aleppo, causing material damage. At that time, Moscow did not comment on these claims.

Additionally, the media outlet released a video that purportedly shows an HUR flag flying over a building in Aleppo province. This video claimed that Ukrainian military intelligence units were engaged in a “special operation” in the region aimed at “destroying Russian forces in Syria.” However, the Russian military has not reported any significant attacks on their facilities or major losses in recent months.

Recently, a coalition of Idlib-based militias and extremist groups led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, previously known as Jabhat al-Nusra and associated with Al-Qaeda, conducted an attack on government-controlled territory in northern Syria on Wednesday. The group initially claimed to have captured roughly 400 square kilometers of territory and reached the city of Aleppo, although government forces have since managed to halt their advance, with both Russian and Syrian air forces conducting strikes against the militants over the past few days.

On Sunday, the Syrian state-run SANA news agency reported that government forces successfully repelled a terrorist offensive near the city of Hama, resulting in significant casualties among the militants. Syrian President Bashar Assad reiterated his commitment to defeating and destroying the terrorists “no matter how intense their attacks are.”

In another context, in July, the HUR acknowledged its support for Tuareg militants in the Sahel region of West Africa. This admission followed a Tuareg attack that resulted in the deaths of numerous Wagner Group private military personnel and local armed forces in Mali, leading to a diplomatic crisis. The foreign minister of Mali subsequently called on the UN Security Council to address Ukraine’s backing of African militant groups. Furthermore, last month, Damascus accused Kyiv of forging an alliance with the HTS terrorist group in Syria. According to Syrian government sources, Ukrainian operatives were providing the former Al-Qaeda affiliate with arms supplied to Kyiv by the US.
