Media reports German city stops accepting Ukrainians
Mayor Jurgen Fundke of Bad Griesbach, a Bavarian town in Germany, has announced that he will not accept any new Ukrainian refugees, citing the area's disproportionate burden from the ongoing migrant crisis, as reported by local media on Friday.

According to the Passauer Neue Presse, Fundke has had conflicts with authorities in the Passau district, arguing that his resort town has taken in too many newcomers and has instructed local officials to halt the registration of additional refugees.

He clarified that his stance is not a reflection of xenophobia, emphasizing that local residents are eager to assist Ukrainians fleeing conflict. “However, refugees must be distributed more fairly between towns and communities,” he stated.

The mayor highlighted the strain on local resources, noting that schools and kindergartens in the area are already at capacity due to the influx of refugees. He cited a recent situation where nearly 40 asylum-seekers were set to be housed in a former hotel that was already accommodating around 100 Ukrainians.

Authorities in the district responded with displeasure to Fundke’s refusal, with a spokesperson recognizing the challenges of hosting refugees but insisting on the obligation to provide adequate shelter for those escaping war and violence. The district also warned the mayor of potential “consequences” if he does not comply, as reported by Bild. Additionally, city hall manager Markus Kleinmann indicated that the district might issue a decree to have someone else oversee the registration process, given that officials are required by law to fulfill this duty.

As of June 2024, Germany has welcomed nearly 1.2 million Ukrainian refugees, making it the top destination for them in the EU, followed by Poland with over 950,000. Official data indicates that Russia has received more than 5.3 million Ukrainians as of early 2023.

Furthermore, Germany continues to see an influx of migrants from various countries amid ongoing crises in the Middle East and Africa, contributing to total refugee arrivals of 2.67 million and 1.93 million in 2022 and 2023, respectively.
