Kremlin Calls It ‘Irresponsible’ to Provide Kiev with Nuclear Weapons
The notion of supplying Ukraine with nuclear weapons originates from the “extremist flank” of the country's Western supporters, according to Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov. He indicated that those proposing such an idea have lost touch with reality.

A report last week by The New York Times indicated that officials from the EU and the U.S. have suggested that outgoing President Joe Biden might consider providing Ukraine with nuclear arms as a “security guarantee.” The article noted that this would present “an instant and enormous deterrent,” though it acknowledged that such a decision would be “complicated and have serious implications.”

In response to this report, Peskov commented, “You know, even the most provocative line aimed at escalating tensions has a fringe extremist flank. This idea probably comes from this fringe extremist flank.” He characterized the proposal to transfer nuclear weapons to Ukraine as “absolutely irresponsible deliberations by people, who probably have a poor understanding… of reality, and who do not feel a shred of responsibility” for the potential consequences of their suggestions.

Peskov also remarked that “all of these statements are anonymous.”

He expressed concern that the “outgoing administration in Washington continues to pursue the route of further escalation.”

Additionally, U.S. lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene has criticized the notion of arming Kiev with nuclear weapons, labeling it “insane and completely unconstitutional, possibly an act of treason.” In a post on X, the Georgia representative questioned whether the Biden administration aims “to start a nuclear war and use it as the reason to stop the transfer of power to [President-elect Donald] Trump.”

Last week, Russia updated its nuclear doctrine to permit a nuclear response to conventional attacks by non-nuclear states that are supported by a power possessing weapons of mass destruction.

In retaliation for Ukraine's use of U.S. and UK long-range weapons against internationally recognized Russian territory, Moscow launched its new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile at a Ukrainian military industrial site. These Ukrainian strikes were noted to have taken place after receiving a nod from Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that attacks within Russia have escalated the Ukraine conflict to a global scale, emphasizing that Kiev could not execute such operations without NATO's assistance. He cautioned, “We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against military facilities of those countries that allow the use of their weapons against our facilities.”
