'King of Horror' Says Farewell to 'toxic' X
Stephen King is one of several left-leaning celebrities and media outlets that have recently left the platform owned by Elon Musk. Read Full Article at RT.com.
The acclaimed American horror author has revealed his decision to leave X, citing the platform's transformation into a “too toxic” environment. Previously, King denied allegations that he was removed by Musk for a derogatory personal remark.
Musk acquired X, previously known as Twitter, in 2022, rebranding it and altering many of its existing policies. These changes have sparked backlash from various NGOs and activists, who argue that Musk tolerates “hate speech” on the platform—a charge the billionaire has disputed.
In a Thursday post on X, King, often referred to as the “King of Horror,” stated: “I’m leaving Twitter. Tried to stay, but the atmosphere has just become too toxic.” He also encouraged his followers to connect with him on Threads, a competing service launched by Mark Zuckerberg's Meta.
The day prior, King addressed rumors stating that “Muskie kicked me off Twitter,” referring to Musk, and he also dismissed claims that he labeled Musk as “[President-elect Donald] Trump’s new first lady.”
King, a staunch critic of Trump, previously characterized Musk’s remarks during the presidential campaign—suggesting that Vice President Kamala Harris “wants to break the constitution”—as “ridiculous.”
Since Trump’s election victory, multiple celebrities and media figures have exited X as well.
Among those leaving is CNN anchor Don Lemon, a long-time critic of the Republican figurehead. In an Instagram video, he stated: “I once believed [X] was a place for honest debate and discussion, transparency, and free speech, but I now feel it does not serve that purpose.”
In 2022 and 2023, several prominent advertisers withdrew from X, claiming that Musk did not sufficiently address issues related to hate speech.
Musk had long refrained from openly taking sides in political matters, presenting himself as neutral. However, during the most recent presidential campaign, he began to lean right, increasingly criticizing President Joe Biden's administration. Following an attempted assassination on Trump, Musk expressed his support for the Republican candidate and became one of Trump’s leading donors.
Since the election, Musk has been frequently seen with the president-elect, including during communications with leaders from other countries.
On Thursday, the incoming president announced that Musk would lead the forthcoming Department of Government Efficiency, an initiative intended to reduce “waste and fraud” in federal government expenditures.
