JFK’s Grandson Criticizes Trump’s Decision to "Release Assassination Files"
Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of John F. Kennedy, has criticized US President Donald Trump for opting to declassify documents related to JFK's assassination in 1963.

The assassination of the 35th US president has long been an area of speculation, particularly regarding potential involvement from rogue elements within the US government.

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order requiring plans to be formulated for the release of the JFK assassination files within 15 days. The president stated that the decision marks “the first step toward restoring transparency and accountability.”

Later that day, Schlossberg took to X to address what he characterized as “conspiracy theories” surrounding his grandfather’s death.

“The truth is a lot [sic] sadder than the myth — a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Not part of an inevitable grand scheme. Declassification is using JFK as a political prop, when he’s not here to punch back. There’s nothing heroic about it,” he asserted.

Many users on X disagreed with Schlossberg’s views, arguing that JFK's legacy and the details surrounding his life and death “belong to the American people.” Some have also questioned the extended secrecy, suggesting that “there is obviously something in there the government doesn’t want to let the public know.”

During his first term, Trump had committed to a similar pledge but eventually bowed to pressure from the CIA and FBI to withhold certain documents.

JFK was assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in November 1963. The official investigation pointed to former US Marine Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone suspect; however, it failed to establish a clear motive beyond his general dissatisfaction with society and the government. Oswald was killed soon after by local resident Jack Ruby.

In addition to the JFK documents, Trump’s executive order aims to declassify remaining federal records concerning the 1968 assassinations of his brother, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Reverend Martin Luther King Jr.

The King family responded with more measured tones. Bernice King, the youngest daughter of Reverend King, described the assassination as “a deeply personal family loss.” She expressed hope that the family would have the opportunity to review the files before they are made public.

Schlossberg has recently faced scrutiny for several controversial remarks. Earlier this month, he drew criticism for comparing Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, to his grandmother Jacqueline Kennedy, a comment he later deemed inappropriate. In 2024, he condemned the auction of clothing belonging to his late aunt, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, labeling it “super creepy." Additionally, in 2023, he referred to his cousin Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s presidential campaign as “an embarrassment” and endorsed Joe Biden instead.
