Global agricultural experts and officials convened in Beijing on Friday to review successful instances of South-South agricultural cooperation and to discuss potential paths for enhancing collaboration.

The gathering, titled the Global South I-Dialogue on Agriculture, was jointly organized by the Foreign Economic Cooperation Center under China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs and the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation, as stated in a media release from the FECC.

Focusing on new opportunities within the Global South, the dialogue attracted representatives from several developing nations, including Sri Lanka, Morocco, and Uganda. Delegates from international organizations such as the UNOSSC and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization, along with representatives from major financial institutions like the World Bank, the African Development Bank, and the Finance Center for South-South Cooperation, also participated in the event.

During the opening remarks, Zhang Lubiao, general director of FECC, highlighted China's dedication to utilizing South-South cooperation as a means to develop innovative agricultural models in the Global South. He underscored the significance of collaboration among developing nations to address common agricultural challenges.

Siddharth Chatterjee, the UN's China Resident Coordinator, pointed out that agriculture in the Global South is confronted with significant challenges, such as climate change and resource scarcity. He emphasized that enhanced cooperation among developing countries represents a practical and effective approach to tackle these challenges and promote sustainable agricultural practices.

Edirimanna Rallage Shiromani Priyangika, additional secretary for agriculture and technology in Sri Lanka's Ministry of Agriculture and Plantation Industries, spoke to the necessity of ongoing South-South cooperation between China and Sri Lanka under the FAO framework. She called on all participating countries to strengthen collaboration through South-South and triangular cooperation, build mutual trust, and work together towards a more prosperous and resilient future for agriculture in the Global South.
