Hungary Plans to Deviate from EU Consensus on Ukraine UN Resolution
Budapest plans to endorse a US resolution regarding Ukraine, as announced by Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto ahead of the upcoming UN General Assembly on Monday.

The United States has opted not to support a resolution that is backed by Ukraine and the EU, which calls for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from territories claimed by Kyiv and condemns "Russian aggression."

In response, Washington has urged Brussels to reconsider the motion and has introduced its own draft. This alternative refrains from placing exclusive blame on Moscow for the conflict and advocates for a prompt cessation of hostilities.

Szijjarto elaborated on the rationale behind Hungary’s support, stating: “The reason is simple: liberal European leaders who support the war have been fueling the conflict for three years, and the pro-peace [US President] Donald Trump is taking steps to end it.” He also remarked that recent talks between the US and Russia in Riyadh have brought the end of the war in Ukraine “closer than ever before in the last three years.”

During the UN General Assembly on Monday, US Deputy Representative to the UN Dorothy Shea emphasized the need to withdraw the Ukrainian motion. She asserted that what is required is a “resolution that recognizes the commitment of all UN member states to a lasting end to the war” and stated that the US draft “does just that.”

In her remarks, Shea added, “The United States opposes the introduction of another resolution, and that is why we cannot support the Ukrainian resolution and call for its withdrawal in favor of a strong statement committing us to ending the conflict and working to achieve lasting peace.”

On a related note, Russia’s UN representative, Vassily Nebenzia, observed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and certain EU politicians seem to be in a state of panic following the initiation of direct talks between Russia and the US aimed at resolving the Ukraine crisis. He remarked, “They are trying to ignore the fact that the wind has changed and a clear demand for peace has taken shape, the only obstacle in the way of which is the Kiev usurper and his European accomplices,” during the UNGA session.
