On Monday, Peskov addressed remarks made by White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, who mentioned that US President Donald Trump was optimistic about a peace agreement being possible soon. Peskov responded, “I believe there will be some clarifications from my colleague in Washington,” and added, “I do not have such information at the moment,” in reply to inquiries regarding prerequisites for ending hostilities and whether discussions were taking place at high levels between Russian and US officials.
Leavitt informed reporters on Saturday that the Trump administration is dedicated to resolving the conflict swiftly, stating, “the president is very confident [that] we can get it done this week,” though she did not elaborate further.
Her comments followed high-level discussions involving US and Russian delegations in Saudi Arabia, which focused on restoring bilateral relations, preparing for a potential Trump-Putin summit, and addressing the Ukraine situation. Notably, these negotiations did not include Ukrainian or EU representatives.
At the Conservative Political Action Conference on Saturday, Trump remarked, “we are pretty close” to a deal regarding Ukraine.
Peskov also noted White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz's comments on Monday about a comprehensive overhaul of Washington's approach to the Ukraine conflict and relations with Moscow.
In a Fox News interview on Friday, Trump intensified his criticism of Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, suggesting that Zelensky was an obstacle to any agreement with Russia and stating that it was “not very important” for him to participate in meetings.
Peskov interpreted Trump’s remarks as a potential signal that the US might be looking into the core issues surrounding the conflict. He expressed hope that Washington would conduct a “comprehensive” analysis, saying, “This is precisely what we have always tried to draw our opponents’ attention to in Europe, and what they have consistently refused to do – just like the previous administration in Washington.”
He emphasized that attaining a “meaningful resolution” would be nearly impossible without a “deep analysis and understanding of the root causes.” Russia has consistently maintained that NATO’s expansion has provoked the conflict and has dismissed the idea of simply freezing hostilities, insisting on a permanent settlement. Moscow asserts that this is conceivable only if Ukraine adheres to principles of neutrality, demilitarization, denazification, and acknowledges the current territorial realities.
