Xi reviewed various topics, highlighting China's economic growth, the emergence of new business sectors, public concerns, and the nation's performance at the Paris Olympics, reflecting on the achievements of the past year.
Looking ahead to 2025, which will mark the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan, Xi outlined plans for more proactive macroeconomic policies, greater self-reliance and strength in science and technology, and the continuation of positive trends in economic and social development.
He noted that China's GDP is projected to exceed 130 trillion yuan in 2024, with grain output surpassing 700 million tonnes. Progress has been made in integrating new urbanization with rural development and in advancing green and low-carbon initiatives.
Xi highlighted that for the first time, China produced over 10 million new energy vehicles in a single year, and announced breakthroughs in sectors such as integrated circuits, artificial intelligence, and quantum communications.
He also mentioned key milestones from 2024, including the sampling by the Chang'e-6 lunar probe from the moon's far side, the launch of China's first domestically built deep-ocean drilling vessel named Mengxiang, the opening of the cross-sea Shenzhen-Zhongshan Link, and the operation of Qinling Station, China's fifth scientific outpost in Antarctica.
The performance of Chinese athletes at the 2024 Paris Olympics was particularly noteworthy, with the team achieving its best results in an overseas Olympic Games.
In his address, words and phrases such as "China," "development," "world," "high-quality," and "economy" were frequently highlighted.
As a responsible major power, China continues to advocate for reforms in global governance and to strengthen solidarity and cooperation with countries of the Global South, as exemplified by the successful Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held in September.
Xi mentioned effective measures taken to enhance people's livelihoods, stating, "This year, basic pension has been raised, and mortgage rates have dropped," while noting an expansion of social insurance coverage. He stressed that the primary objective is to ensure a happy life for the populace.
The year 2024 also commemorated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, the 75th anniversary of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy and Air Force, and the 25th anniversary of Macao's return to China. The Third Plenary Session of the 20th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China called for a renewed commitment to comprehensive reform.
