Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Records Peak Crossing Six Years After Opening
On Thursday, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge marks its sixth anniversary of opening to traffic, achieving a record number of passenger and vehicle crossings, as per recent data.

Statistics from the HZMB border inspection station indicate that by October 22, a total of 62.3 million passengers had crossed the Zhuhai Port, along with over 12.76 million vehicles clearing customs.

The HZMB is a 55-kilometer transportation system connecting the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao SAR, and the city of Zhuhai in Guangdong Province. Recognized as the world's longest bridge-and-tunnel sea crossing, it has become an essential link for residents in the region.

Since its opening, the bridge has emerged as one of the preferred and most convenient routes for residents of the three areas, facilitated by regional integration and 24-hour customs clearance at the port.

This year, data from the HZMB border inspection station reveals that total passenger traffic through the bridge's ports had reached 21.5 million person-times by October 22, representing an 84.8 percent year-on-year increase and 1.96 times higher than the same period in 2019.

"Over the six years since its opening, the total number of Hong Kong and Macao residents entering and exiting the mainland through the bridge has exceeded 35.6 million person-times, accounting for more than 57 percent. In 2024 alone, the number of Hong Kong and Macao residents entering and exiting the mainland through the bridge exceeded 12.9 million person-times, up 82.8 percent year on year, setting a new record," said Chen Faqiu, head of the HZMB border inspection station.

Moreover, driving has become one of the most favored methods of cross-border transportation for Hong Kong and Macao residents. By September of this year, the Gongbei customs at the bridge port had processed a total of 3.6251 million vehicles with Hong Kong and Macao license plates, thanks to policies introduced in 2023 for "Macao vehicles northward" and "Hong Kong vehicles northward."

The HZMB also plays a crucial role for travelers heading abroad or entering China. To date, the border inspection department has processed 6,052 domestic tour groups comprising 234,800 tourists and has inspected over 330,000 foreign passengers, marking a significant 169 percent year-on-year increase. Additionally, 37,000 passengers have successfully cleared customs using the "via Zhuhai to Hong Kong flight" model.

The bridge has seen a notable rise in cargo volume as well. From 2018 to September this year, the total value of goods imported and exported across the bridge port reached 942.7 billion yuan, with 164.97 billion yuan in the first nine months of this year, reflecting a year-on-year growth of 10.4 percent.
