GOP governor: ‘Terrible idea’ for Trump to announce candidacy before Christmas
If the former president announces his candidacy soon, “it'll have no effect on anything,” New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said.
It would be a "terrible idea" for former President Donald Trump to announce a 2024 presidential candidacy before Christmas, New Hampshire Gov. Chris Sununu said Sunday.
"People are really going to be happy one way or another that the election is over come Tuesday. And everyone's going to want to take a breath," the Republican governor said on CBS' "Face the Nation."
Trump, who continues to deny his loss in the 2020 election, has repeatedly suggested he will run again, though not said it outright. His advisers have discussed launching a 2024 campaign as soon as Nov. 14, Axios reported last week.
If Trump does make the announcement, "it'll have no effect on anything, and I mean that quite sincerely," Sununu said, adding that "eight to maybe a dozen other candidates" could run on the Republican side.
"He [Trump] doesn't keep anybody out of the race," Sununu said.
Contrary to the insistence of many Democrats, Sununu said he doesn't think President Joe Biden will run again in 2024. The governor also laughed off moderator Margaret Brennan's suggestion that he might run for the Oval Office himself.
