Germans Demonstrate Opposition to Arms Shipments to Ukraine and Israel
Demonstrators in Berlin have called for a ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev, as well as efforts to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.

Thousands took to the streets of Berlin to protest against arms shipments to Ukraine and Israel, while also voicing concerns about potential nuclear escalation, according to local media and social media videos.

The rally was organized by various pro-peace and left-wing groups and coincided with German Unity Day, which commemorates the 1990 unification of West Germany and communist East Germany.

Protesters displayed banners reading “Peace,” “Never again war,” and “Diplomats instead of grenades.” Some messages expressed solidarity with Palestinians and called for an “end to the occupation terror,” referring to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

Several demonstrators carried Russian and Palestinian flags, while one banner featured the Russian, Ukrainian, and German flags along with the word “friendship.” Another banner criticized Chancellor Olaf Scholz as the “Bomb chancellor.”

Organizers claimed that over 40,000 people attended the demonstration, whereas police estimated the number to be “in the low five figure range,” according to Deutsche Welle. The protests reportedly occurred without major incidents.

Sahra Wagenknecht, a prominent left-wing figure and leader of the newly formed Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance party, was present at the rally. Addressing attendees, she emphasized the importance of negotiating with Russian President Vladimir Putin to resolve the Ukraine conflict. “I find it so annoying when people always come at us with their big morals saying you can’t talk to Putin for moral reasons,” she stated.

Wagenknecht criticized the German government for adhering to U.S. foreign policy directives and expressed concerns about the potential deployment of American intermediate-range missiles in Germany.

She also addressed the Israel-Hamas war, saying, “anyone who remains silent about the terrible war crimes in Gaza… don’t tell me that you are moral. This is hypocrisy. This terrible war must also be finally put to an end.”

Germany has become a major donor to Ukraine, providing tanks, air defense systems, artillery, and various other weapons to Kiev. Russia has condemned these shipments, claiming they merely prolong the conflict.

Additionally, Berlin exports a considerable amount of military equipment to Israel. Reports from last month indicated that German arms exports had been limited due to concerns regarding potential violations of humanitarian law.
