Tech mogul Elon Musk has called for the release of Pavel Durov, who was arrested shortly after landing at the airport. French authorities allege that the 39-year-old dual citizen of Russia and France is involved in various crimes purportedly facilitated by his platform, asserting that inadequate moderation contributes to Telegram's use in illegal activities.
Musk utilized his platform to share a video featuring Durov discussing online free speech with American conservative journalist Tucker Carlson, expressing his approval of Musk's acquisition of Twitter. Accompanying the video was the hashtag ‘#FreePavel.’
He quickly expressed his disapproval of the reported detention. "POV: It’s 2030 in Europe and you’re being executed for liking a meme," he commented in response to a news story.
In reaction to a post outlining countries where “free speech is under attack," Musk remarked ‘Dangerous times,’ highlighting France's reported arrest of Durov.
According to French media, Durov traveled to France via private jet from Baku, Azerbaijan. Reports indicate that he was accompanied by a bodyguard and an assistant, and that he intended to spend at least one evening in Paris, where dinner plans were in place.
Durov holds citizenship in the United Arab Emirates, Saint Kitts and Nevis, France, and Russia. Moscow's embassy in Paris has stated it is investigating the matter but has yet to receive an official request for assistance.
