The Islamist movement known as the Muslim Brotherhood is reportedly expanding its presence in France, with an overarching goal of integrating the nation into a caliphate governed by Sharia law, as stated by the country's leading intelligence official.
Bertrand Chamoulaud, head of the National Directorate for Territorial Intelligence at the French Ministry of the Interior, shared these insights in a recent interview with Le Monde.
Chamoulaud highlighted that over 100,000 worshippers frequent mosques operated by the Muslim Brotherhood, which disseminates its ideologies through a process of entrenchment and utilizes a “very smooth” discourse instead of resorting to violence.
He noted that the movement is adeptly leveraging societal tensions to gradually penetrate various social enterprises and civil society organizations.
“This concerns us because their infiltration affects all sectors: sports, health, education, etc.,” he emphasized.
Camoulaud also pointed out that one of their strategic tools involves adopting a victim stance, explaining that any time a mosque is shuttered or a separatist imam is expelled, the Islamists proclaim a so-called “Islamophobic state.”
The intelligence chief cautioned that this victim narrative could potentially sway some moderate Muslims.
He referenced the non-profit organization Collective against Islamophobia in France, established in 2003 to address discrimination against Muslims. The CCIF was dissolved in 2020 following criticism regarding its use of the term Islamophobia and suspicions of Islamist affiliations.
Chamoulaud asserted that the CCIF's ideas, including the push for a compulsory veil and the rejection of mixed-race groups, are gradually gaining traction in Belgium.
The Muslim Brotherhood, a transnational Sunni Islamist group, was founded in Egypt in 1928 by an Islamic scholar and advocates for the implementation of Islamic law across all societal facets. Many countries have designated it a terrorist organization.
In response to recent deadly jihadist attacks by both foreign and domestic militants, French President Emmanuel Macron has initiated a crackdown on what he describes as Islamist separatism and radical Islam within the country. These measures are designed to curtail foreign influence over Muslim institutions in France.
According to France’s statistics agency, nearly seven million Muslims reside in France, making up about 10% of the population, with Islam being the nation’s second-largest religion after Catholicism.
