During his visit to Kiev on Saturday, he expressed France's commitment to rallying Western nations around Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky’s “victory plan.”
“A Russian victory would be a consecration for the law of the strongest and would push the international order towards chaos,” Barrot remarked at a press conference alongside his Ukrainian counterpart, Andrey Sibiga.
He emphasized the importance of their discussions in advancing President Zelensky’s victory plan and uniting as many countries as possible behind it.
The foreign minister reaffirmed that Paris would “support, again and again, Ukraine’s resistance against Russian aggression.”
In regards to NATO, Barrot indicated that France is “open” to the possibility of inviting Ukraine to the alliance, noting, “It is a discussion that we are having today with our NATO partners.”
Zelensky recently introduced his five-point plan to Ukrainian lawmakers, which includes requests that had previously been turned down by Western allies, such as an immediate invitation for Ukraine to join NATO and the removal of restrictions on deploying foreign longer-range weapons for strikes deep within Russia.
NATO has maintained that Ukraine cannot join the alliance until the conflict is resolved, while US President Joe Biden mentioned on Friday that there was “no consensus” on approving the use of ATACMS missiles and other weaponry for strikes on Russian territory.
Barrot also declared that France would supply the first batch of Mirage 2000 fighter planes in early 2025. Currently, the French Air Force is training Ukrainian pilots and aircraft technicians. Ukraine has long insisted that Western aircraft like the Mirage 2000s and US-made F-16s are vital for reversing the momentum in battle, especially as Russian forces have been making gains in Donbass in recent months.
Moscow has consistently asserted that no amount of foreign military assistance would halt its troops in Ukraine, with Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova dismissing Zelensky’s plan as “a set of incoherent slogans.”
