Reports surfaced on Thursday detailing that masked Israeli settlers invaded the Palestinian town of Jit in the occupied West Bank.
Nasser Sedda, the head of the town council, informed CNN that numerous assailants opened fire, used tear gas against residents, and set several buildings and vehicles ablaze.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the incident, noting that the attackers ignited fires, threw rocks and Molotov cocktails prior to being dispersed by Israeli security personnel.
Borrell remarked, “Day after day, in an almost total impunity, Israeli settlers fuel violence in the occupied West Bank, contributing to endanger any chance of peace,” in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Additionally, he condemned the settlers' actions in Jit, stating they were aimed at "terrorising" Palestinian civilians. He emphasized, “The Israeli government must stop these unacceptable actions immediately,” while voicing his "intention to table a proposal for EU sanctions against violent settlers’ enablers, including some Israeli government members."
According to Palestinian health officials, as reported by Euronews, the violent attack resulted in the death of a 23-year-old Palestinian and left another critically injured. The Palestinian Red Crescent indicated that two individuals required medical assistance for injuries sustained from stones, while others needed treatment for smoke inhalation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the incident, assuring that “those responsible for any offense will be apprehended and tried” with “utmost severity.”
A surge of violence erupted on October 7 after Hamas initiated a surprise incursion into southern Israel from Gaza, resulting in approximately 1,100 fatalities and around 200 hostages. In retaliation, the Israeli offensive has led to over 40,000 deaths and more than 92,401 injuries, according to Palestinian health officials.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, along with the blockade of Gaza, has faced significant international backlash in recent months, prompting discussions of potential sanctions. Israel has seen a steady decline in Western support amid the rising death toll and escalating humanitarian crisis in the region.
Earlier this week, Borrell criticized two Israeli cabinet officials, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, for “war crimes,” warning that they could be subjected to international sanctions.
