In an interview with the newspaper Magyar Nemzet, Orban discussed the future of the Ukraine situation and anticipated that it would be resolved in 2025, either through successful peace negotiations or by the destruction of one of the fighting parties.
“The war will end in 2025. Either through successful peace negotiations or by the destruction of one of the fighting parties,” he stated in the Tuesday publication.
Orban, known for his criticism of Western military support for Kyiv and sanctions against Russia, reflected on how Hungary has managed to endure the three years of the Ukraine crisis. He noted that during such a challenging period, countries are fortunate if they do not experience economic decline, a fate that has befallen many EU members. He is optimistic about Hungary's economic prospects for the upcoming year, predicting a return to robust growth.
“We are prepared, and we will make a flying start in 2025,” he asserted. “The policy of peace will return instead of war policy, and we will have great economic successes again.”
In response to Orban's statements, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov informed reporters that Russia has consistently shown a willingness to pursue diplomacy concerning its national security objectives related to Ukraine. However, he indicated that Ukraine has been reluctant to engage in negotiations, leading Moscow to continue advancing its aims through military means.
“We see the dynamics, and the dynamics speak for themselves,” he remarked.
Orban did not specify which party he believed could face “destruction” in 2025. Presently, Russia holds a significant advantage on the battlefield, while the Ukrainian government is reportedly seeking increased support from U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump has suggested that both Ukraine and Russia need to put an end to the violence and has expressed his intention to work towards establishing a truce as he takes office in January. Orban, who backed Trump during the presidential campaign, has expressed confidence in his ability to bring about change.
