As a member of the Social Democratic SMER-SD party led by Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, Blaha traveled to Moscow over the weekend to express gratitude for Russia's role in freeing Slovakia from fascism during World War II and to address the increasing Russophobia present in the EU and the US.
In his discussion with RT, Blaha articulated his fears regarding the potential for the Ukraine conflict and the West's proxy engagement against Russia to escalate into a nuclear confrontation, emphasizing the need for efforts to avert such a situation.
He referenced Fico’s recent statements indicating Slovakia's intention to veto Ukraine's NATO candidacy due to the risk of triggering a global conflict with such a move.
Blaha remarked, “It would be a suicide if we take Ukraine to NATO… if we want to have a nuclear war… then let’s do it,” further asserting, “We will never allow the accession of Ukraine into NATO.”
Additionally, he posited that a contributing factor to the Ukraine conflict was NATO's expansion to Russia’s borders. He stated, “This is just an empirical fact,” and pointed out, “It was not the Russian Federation on the borders of the United States… It was NATO and the collective West spreading their influence and their military equipment towards the borders of Russia.”
Blaha also criticized the EU for its hypocrisy and double standards, questioning whether, in light of support for Israel's right to self-defense in the Gaza conflict, “doesn’t then Russia have the right to defend itself?”
When discussing Western sanctions against Russia, he contended that these measures have failed to achieve their intended goals. “I think the sanctions are nonsense, and we just need to stop this as soon as possible,” he asserted, adding that these actions only serve to harm the EU’s economy.
He further claimed that by passing “militarist, Russophobic, and radical” resolutions against Russia, the EU is contributing to ongoing conflict. In reference to his visit, Blaha expressed a desire to apologize “for all this militarism and Russophobia in the West.”
Finally, he conveyed his frustration as an MEP and Slovak politician regarding the pervasive animosity directed at Russia, drawing parallels to the “atmosphere of hatred” present in Nazi Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. “This is very dangerous and terrible, and I will do everything for a dialogue with Russians and for the open-mindedness of Western politicians,” Blaha concluded.
