The investigation into the IRS system, first disclosed by the Washington Post on Sunday, marks the latest effort by Musk-led DOGE to revamp U.S. government agencies in an attempt to curb wasteful spending.
The IRS systems hold sensitive financial data related to taxpayers, including tax returns, Social Security numbers, addresses, banking details, and employment records. The Integrated Data Retrieval System, utilized by IRS employees, facilitates the review of tax information, issuance of notices, and updates to taxpayer information.
Reports indicate that DOGE software engineer Gavin Kliger was on-site at IRS headquarters last Thursday and is slated to serve as a senior adviser to the acting commissioner. The tax agency is still finalizing the specifics of his position. Kliger is expected to have extensive access to IRS systems, but as of Sunday, he had not yet been granted access to sensitive tax data.
“Waste, fraud, and abuse have been deeply entrenched in our broken system for far too long. It takes direct access to the system to identify and fix it,” White House spokesman Harrison Fields told The Post. He added that DOGE remains focused on uncovering fraud and ensuring Americans understand how their “hard-earned” tax dollars are spent by the government.
Last week, Musk also accused federal employees of defrauding taxpayers.
“We do find it rather odd that there are quite a few people in the bureaucracy who have ostensibly a salary of a few hundred thousand dollars, but somehow managed to accrue tens of millions of dollars in net worth while they are in that position,” Musk stated while in the Oval Office with US President Donald Trump. “We’re just curious as to where it came from.”
The request for access has sparked concerns among government officials and privacy advocates, who caution that allowing Musk to access Americans’ private tax information could present significant risks.
The IRS plans to lay off thousands of probationary employees in the near future, in line with the Trump administration’s broader strategy to reduce federal spending.
This decision is part of a series of workforce reductions mandated by Trump as part of his campaign to streamline government operations, which includes measures such as a hiring freeze, offering buyouts to federal employees, and instructing agencies to work with DOGE to identify inefficiencies.
