Local authorities have reported that the Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Ibn Rushd school provided shelter for hundreds of displaced people amidst the ongoing conflict.
Recent Israeli airstrikes in Gaza have resulted in the deaths of at least 24 Palestinians, targeting a mosque and a school. The Israeli military claims these sites were utilized by Hamas operatives.
Gaza’s Government Media Office condemned the attacks as “two brutal massacres” on Sunday, stating that the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Mosque, located next to a hospital, and the Ibn Rushd school were hit. According to their statement on Telegram, both locations housed “hundreds of displaced people.”
In addition to the reported fatalities, the strikes also left 93 individuals wounded.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged the airstrikes but maintained that their planes were targeting “Hamas terrorists” working within the former school. They asserted that the Al-Aqsa Mosque had become a command-and-control center for the group.

“These command and control centers were used by Hamas terrorists to plan and execute terrorist attacks against IDF troops and the State of Israel,” the IDF stated. They also mentioned that “numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians” before executing the strikes and described the incident as “a further example of the Hamas terrorist organization’s systematic abuse of civilian infrastructure.”

Israel has faced widespread condemnation for what critics describe as indiscriminate strikes on the Palestinian territory, as well as a ground operation that has led to extensive destruction in the area. The conflict intensified following a surprise attack by Hamas last October, leading to the deaths of over 41,000 Palestinians and 1,100 Israelis, according to official figures.
