All flights by American Airlines in the United States were halted due to a “technical issue,” as stated by the company in a statement on Tuesday. This widespread cancellation lasted for several hours and significantly impacted millions during one of the peak travel seasons of the year.
The Federal Aviation Administration indicated on its website that American Airlines, the nation's largest carrier, had requested a ground stop for all its flights on Tuesday morning.
Shortly after, the company confirmed it was “experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights.”
In response to a customer's post on X, American Airlines noted that it could not provide a specific timeline for when flights would resume, but mentioned that technicians were “trying to fix it in the shortest possible time.”
Footage shared on X captured passengers waiting in crowded gate areas. In one clip, an American Airlines employee informed travelers that “our system is down.”
The holiday season, particularly around Christmas and New Year, is one of the busiest times for air travel. According to the trade group Airlines for America, an estimated 54 million US passengers are expected to fly between December 19 and January 6, marking a 6% increase from the previous year.
