Der Spiegel reports Ukraine's top general sanctioned Nord Stream attack
The German weekly Der Spiegel has reported that it has identified the divers responsible for the sabotage of the Nord Stream undersea gas pipelines. This investigation aligns with Western claims that the September 2022 attack was financed by private Ukrainian sources and received approval from General Valery Zaluzhny, who has since retired and is currently serving as Kiev’s ambassador to the UK.

The timing of this report coincides with the approach of the second anniversary of the significant attack. Although German investigators have not officially named a suspect, Der Spiegel and various other news outlets have indicated that a group of Ukrainian divers operating from the yacht Andromeda was involved in the bombing.

These outlets have suggested that Ukrainian intelligence officer Roman Chervinsky, who is facing an unrelated investigation in Ukraine, was purportedly the mastermind behind the operation. At that time, General Zaluzhny, serving as commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, allegedly approved the mission. It has been reported by various sources that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was either not informed of the plan or unable to intervene in time.

Following public disagreements regarding military strategy, Zelensky dismissed Zaluzhny in February. The former general has since denied any involvement in the Nord Stream attack.

While Der Spiegel has provided additional context and asserted knowledge of the individuals directly involved, it did not disclose their names. The report claims that most of the divers were civilians experienced in deep-sea work and that the operation was led by a commando. It further suggested that the planning for this mission began years before the onset of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in February 2022.

Previously, German media indicated that investigators were seeking the arrest of a Ukrainian professional diver named Vladimir Z. for his alleged connection to the sabotage.

Russia has expressed frustration over what it calls a lack of cooperation from European nations that have jurisdiction over the Nord Stream investigation. Moscow officials allege this indicates a cover-up of what they describe as a “terrorist attack.”

Vyacheslav Volodin, chair of the Russian State Duma, claimed on Thursday that the U.S. government and President Joe Biden were responsible for the sabotage. He further accused German Chancellor Olaf Scholz of facilitating the harm to his country's economy by pushing for a switch from affordable Russian energy to pricier American alternatives.

Berlin has declined to comment on the Nord Stream incident, directing queries to Federal Public Prosecutor Jens Rommel, who is overseeing the investigation.
