‘Deep state’ skeptic approved as head of FBI

The U.S. Senate narrowly approved Patel's nomination to become the next FBI director with a vote of 51 to 49. Notably, Republicans Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski sided with Democrats in opposing his appointment.
“My mission as Director is clear: let good cops be cops – and rebuild trust in the FBI,” Patel stated on X after the outcome of the vote.
He further expressed his commitment by saying, “Working alongside the dedicated men and women of the Bureau and our partners, we will rebuild an FBI the American people can be proud of.” In a stark warning to those who threaten the safety of Americans, he added, “And to those who seek to harm Americans – consider this your warning. We will hunt you down in every corner of this planet.”
Former President Trump praised Patel as an “‘America First’ fighter who has spent his career exposing corruption, defending justice, and protecting the American people.” Patel, a former public defender and federal prosecutor, has been a vocal supporter of Trump’s initiatives to combat organized crime, terrorism, and illegal immigration, alongside efforts to eliminate diversity, equity, and inclusion programs in government agencies.
Patel’s memoirs include calls for limiting the FBI’s authority, which he argues is plagued by “government tyranny.” He has also accused what he terms “the deep state” of wielding power against dissenters.
These views led Democrats to label him as radical, with Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin accusing him of being “an extreme MAGA loyalist who would make our country less safe.”
During his confirmation hearing, Patel refuted claims that he had created “an enemies list” of government officials, assuring that under his direction, the FBI would not pursue “retributive actions” against his or Trump’s adversaries, emphasizing, “There will be no politicization at the FBI.”
Throughout his campaign, Trump alleged that his predecessor, Joe Biden, was using the FBI and other agencies as tools to target him and his supporters.
Earlier this month, Trump’s nominee for director of national intelligence, former Hawaii Representative Tulsi Gabbard, was confirmed.
