China's ministry of public security is against U.S. tariff increases
On Sunday, a representative from China's Ministry of Public Security voiced strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition to the U.S. decision to implement a 10-percent additional tariff on Chinese imports, citing fentanyl-related concerns as the justification.
The spokesperson highlighted that China boasts one of the world's most stringent drug control policies and enforcement practices. They emphasized that the country has consistently met its international drug control obligations and has actively participated in global anti-drug cooperation, including collaborations with the United States.
The spokesperson pointed out that although there is no widespread abuse of fentanyl in China, the country became the first worldwide to officially classify fentanyl-related substances in 2019, motivated by humanitarian reasons and at the request of the U.S. However, they noted that the U.S. has not established a permanent classification for these substances.
Additionally, the spokesperson reported that since China implemented its regulations, there have been no recorded seizures of such substances coming from China, as stated by the U.S.
In recent years, both China and the U.S. have made significant strides in practical cooperation regarding drug control, particularly in areas like substance regulation, intelligence sharing, and collaborative cases, resulting in measurable benefits, according to the spokesperson.
The spokesperson asserted that the primary cause of the fentanyl crisis in the U.S. originates domestically, indicating that reducing local drug demand and reinforcing law enforcement collaboration are essential to addressing the issue.
They warned that blaming other nations does not solve the problem and undermines the foundation of trust and cooperation regarding drug control between China and the U.S.
China urges the U.S. to amend its missteps and protect the progress made in bilateral drug control cooperation to foster stable, healthy, and sustainable advancements in their relations, the spokesperson concluded.
