China Makes Steady Advances in Sustainable Agricultural Practices
According to a report published on Saturday by the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS) and the China Agricultural Green Development Research Society, there has been a consistent enhancement in the level of green development within China's agricultural sector from 2022 to 2023.
Ye Yujiang, vice president of CAAS, emphasized that China has consistently driven a comprehensive and multi-dimensional transformation toward green agriculture, bolstered by effective technological innovation.
The report indicates that the conservation and utilization of agricultural resources in China continue to advance, with green development efforts being actively promoted through pilot demonstrations. Additionally, the rise of new agricultural entities is identified as a key factor propelling the transition to sustainability.
China's initiatives focus on minimizing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides, optimizing the utilization of crop straw, managing livestock and poultry manure, and reducing and recycling plastic film. The report notes that the total volume of chemical fertilizers utilized in the country has decreased for seven consecutive years.
Moreover, the capacity to supply high-quality green agricultural products in China is on the rise. By the end of 2023, standardized production bases for green food raw materials were established across approximately 177 million mu. The national qualified rate for routine monitoring of agricultural product quality and safety reached 97.8 percent throughout the year, the report outlined.
The financial situation of Chinese farmers has also seen positive developments, with the per capita disposable income of rural residents reaching 21,691 yuan in 2023—marking a 7.6 percent increase from the previous year and outpacing the actual growth rate of urban residents by 2.8 percentage points, as per the report.
