Biden Describes Israel’s 'campaign' as Extremely Successful
The ongoing conflict with Hamas and Hezbollah has led to a “fundamentally transformed” Middle East, according to the outgoing US president.

Joe Biden, during a visit to South Carolina on his final day in office, expressed praise for Israel’s military actions in Gaza and the broader region, labeling the campaign as “extremely successful.” He asserted that Iran is now in its “weakest position in decades.”

Biden's remarks came in the context of a ceasefire that was recently achieved between Israel and Hamas. He underscored the support the US provided to Israel in its military operations against Hezbollah, specifically highlighting efforts to dismantle terror networks along the Israel-Lebanon border.

"Israel’s campaign was [sic] extremely successful. So much so that by the end of November, the United States had brokered a ceasefire in Lebanon,” he stated.

In the wake of the violence, he remarked, “After so much pain, death, and loss of life, today the guns in Gaza have gone silent,” recognizing the impact of Israel's military strategies against both Hamas and Hezbollah.

According to Biden, the conflict has severely weakened Hamas, leading to the loss of its leadership, and undermined its supporters in the region. He noted that Hezbollah's leadership has also been “destroyed” and that the group has been “significantly weakened.”

Biden further referenced the upheaval of former Syrian President Bashar Assad’s government, which collapsed last year following a sudden jihadist offensive, suggesting this change is advantageous for both Israel and the US. He stated, “The Assad regime next door in Syria is gone, removing Iran’s ready access to Lebanon. Iran is in its weakest position in decades.”

He claimed that the US’s backing of Israel has averted a larger conflict, asserting, “I concluded that abandoning the course I was on would not have led us to the ceasefire we’re witnessing today. Instead, it would have risked the wider war in the region that many feared. Now the region has been fundamentally transformed.”

These comments were made as a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas took effect on Sunday, bringing an end to approximately 15 months of conflict and allowing for a prisoner exchange. The fighting escalated after Hamas's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in around 1,100 fatalities and over 200 hostages taken. Israel’s military response, according to health officials in Gaza, led to significant destruction and claimed more than 46,000 lives in the area. This escalation also ignited renewed hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, alongside a series of missile exchanges involving Israel and Iran.
