The Israel Defense Forces reportedly struck the Taleghan 2 facility located in the Parchin military complex, situated about 20 miles southeast of Tehran. Axios referenced three unnamed U.S. officials, along with one current and one former Israeli official.
According to the unnamed Israeli official, the strike resulted in the destruction of “sophisticated equipment” that was employed in the production of explosives for nuclear device detonation.
Although the Islamic Republic ceased its nuclear weapons program in 2003, it has continued relevant research and developed expertise, as per previous U.S. intelligence reports. During his first term, U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear agreement, which led Tehran to diminish its own commitments to the deal and to accelerate uranium enrichment.
Iran maintains that its nuclear research is aimed solely at civilian applications. “We have repeatedly emphasized that we do not seek nuclear weapons,” said President Masoud Pezeshkian in September. “Our goal is to meet our technical and scientific needs.”
In a response to the conflict in Gaza and the killings of key Hamas and Hezbollah figures, Iran launched nearly 200 ballistic missiles at Israel on October 1. The Israeli military claimed that most of these missiles were intercepted during flight, with the only casualty being a Palestinian man who died from a falling missile fragment in the West Bank.
On October 25, Israel conducted its own attacks on Iranian military positions. Iranian officials reported that these strikes resulted in the deaths of four soldiers and one security guard.
