A spokesman shared with the Daily Beast on Monday that the publication will concentrate on delivering “readers with the facts that matter and the trusted information they need to make informed decisions.”
In its previous endorsement of Biden over then-President Trump, USA Today described the Democrat as offering “a shaken nation a harbor of calm and competence” and suggested he was “well positioned to repair the wreckage” that Trump’s presidency allegedly created.
USA Today’s decision to abstain from endorsing candidates this year aligns it with the Washington Post and the LA Times. The Washington Post, which has been endorsing candidates for nearly 40 years and is noted for its slogan ‘Democracy Dies in Darkness’ introduced after Trump’s 2016 election, stated that this decision reflects a desire to “return to our roots.”
Jeff Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post, described this choice as “principled,” suggesting that “presidential endorsements do nothing to tip the scales of an election” but instead “create a perception of bias.”
Similarly, Patrick Soon-Shiong, the owner of the LA Times, rejected the editorial board’s suggestion to endorse Harris, asserting that choosing not to make a recommendation would be less divisive during a turbulent election year. This decision led to the resignation of three editorial board members.
In contrast, the New York Times has maintained its stance and, having endorsed Biden in 2020 and Hillary Clinton in 2016, supported Harris in September, calling her “the only patriotic choice for president” and stating that Trump “is not fit to be president.”
