White House Spokeswoman Snaps at Reporter Over Hurricane Relief Question
During a briefing on Monday, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre engaged in a heated exchange with Fox News’ Peter Doocy, who raised questions about the Biden administration's funding decisions regarding humanitarian aid.

Doocy inquired about the administration's recent decision to allocate nearly $157 million in humanitarian aid to Lebanon while needing to request Congress for additional disaster relief funds for Hurricane Helene. He asked Jean-Pierre to clarify why this was the case, stating, “On this issue of funding, the administration has money to send to Lebanon without Congress coming back. But Congress does have to come back to approve money to send to people in North Carolina. Do I have that right?” This referred to a letter President Joe Biden sent to Congress last week, where he indicated that US disaster relief agencies had funds to meet immediate needs but would likely exhaust them in the coming weeks.

Jean-Pierre responded by asserting that the White House had “more than $200 million… for the disaster help” and accused Doocy of disseminating “disinformation.” She stated, “People want to do disinformation, misinformation, which is dangerous because then when folks on the ground hear that, they may not want to ask for the help that they need, that is there for them.”

Countering her, Doocy remarked that it was not “misinformation” to assert that there was “not enough money right now” for hurricane victims.

Jean-Pierre maintained that the “whole premise of the question is misinformation,” arguing that the administration had available funds for survivors, but Biden's request for extra funding was prompted by uncertainties regarding the severity of Hurricane Milton, which was forming in the Gulf of Mexico.

The intense exchange concluded with Jean-Pierre urging Congress, currently in recess before November’s presidential election, to “come back and do their job” before she exited the briefing.

Hurricane Helene had a devastating impact on the American southeast, resulting in over 225 fatalities and leaving many without essential services like running water and electricity.

Criticism of the federal response to Hurricane Helene was also voiced by US presidential candidate Donald Trump, who labeled it the “most incompetently managed ‘storm’ at federal level ever seen before” and accused the Biden administration of neglecting storm victims while directing relief to undocumented migrants.

In response, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) criticized Trump on Monday. Administrator Deanne Criswell stated he was “having a hard time telling the difference between fact and fiction,” describing his allegations as “frankly ridiculous.”
