New York City experienced five consecutive days without any shooting victims, marking the first time in thirty years that the city’s police department has recorded such a stretch. This notable achievement coincides with a significant crackdown on illegal immigration across the United States.
An NYPD statement released on Friday indicated that the five-day period spanned from Saturday to Thursday evening and concluded with a shooting incident in Brooklyn.
“This is the longest we’ve gone without a shooting victim since the beginning of the CompStat era,” the department noted, referring to the statistical tracking system introduced in 1994.
However, as reported by the New York Post, the streak was interrupted a mere four minutes following the NYPD announcement when a 34-year-old man was shot multiple times in Brooklyn. The victim has been taken to the hospital and is reportedly in stable condition, but no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.
As of January 19, the NYPD has documented 45 shooting victims since the start of the year, matching the figures from the same period in 2024.
Mayor Eric Adams stated on Wednesday that the NYPD has recovered over 20,000 illegal firearms from the streets since 2022, which is an increase of 3,000 compared to the preceding three-year period.
The NYPD’s report is released amidst a nationwide wave of arrests and the initiation of deportation flights for hundreds of illegal immigrants being returned to their home countries.
On Thursday, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on X that “the largest massive deportation operation in history is well underway.” She mentioned that Donald Trump’s administration had “arrested 538 illegal immigrant criminals,” and noted that “hundreds” had been deported via military aircraft.
Trump, who had pledged a strict approach to illegal immigration during his campaign, declared a national emergency at the southern border upon his inauguration on Monday. He has also unveiled various measures related to immigration and border control, including the deployment of 1,500 active-duty troops to the US-Mexico border.
According to the Office of Homeland Security Statistics, there are roughly 11 million undocumented migrants residing in the United States. In 2022, data indicated that New York was sixth among the ten states with the highest populations of unauthorized immigrants, housing over 400,000 individuals.
The recent immigration measures by the new US administration have faced criticism; Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for respectful bilateral discussions.
In response to the actions of the Trump administration, US Democratic attorneys-general have vowed to take legal action if the Department of Justice enforces a directive requiring local law enforcement to participate in federal immigration operations.
