According to news agencies, Trump has instructed the Defense Department to suspend all military aid to Ukraine following a public disagreement with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. Bloomberg reports that this pause impacts equipment already designated for delivery, including weapons currently in transit on aircraft or ships, or waiting in transit areas in Poland.
The suspension will remain until Trump observes that the Ukrainian leaders “demonstrate a good-faith commitment to peace,” as stated by a senior Pentagon official. The New York Times notes that the order takes effect immediately and affects over $1 billion in “arms and ammunition in the pipeline and on order.”
A White House official told Reuters, “The president has been clear that he is focused on peace. We need our partners to be committed to that goal as well. We are pausing and reviewing our aid to ensure that it is contributing to a solution.”
Earlier reports from The Wall Street Journal indicated that Washington has ceased funding for new weapons sales to Ukraine and is considering freezing weapons shipments.
Trump has accused Zelensky of hindering his efforts to reach a peace deal between Kiev and Moscow. Their public feud escalated into an unprecedented shouting match during a meeting in the Oval Office on Friday, after which Trump criticized Zelensky for being disrespectful to the US.
Zelensky has maintained that any ceasefire should be linked to security guarantees from the US and other Western nations. In contrast, Trump has declined to commit to specific guarantees and has ruled out making Ukraine a NATO member or sending American troops for a potential peacekeeping mission.
On Sunday, Zelensky commented that “an agreement to end the war is still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet.” Trump responded to his remarks on social media, asserting that “America will not put up with it for much longer.”
“This guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.
Zelensky previously expressed to reporters last month that Ukraine faced a “low chance” of survival without American support.
The US is a key supplier of weapons to Kiev, providing M1 Abrams tanks, Bradley armored vehicles, M777 howitzers, HIMARS multiple rocket launchers, and artillery rounds. As of December 2024, the Pentagon has committed over $66 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since 2022.
Russia, for its part, has emphasized that no amount of Western aid will halt its military operations in Ukraine.
