In a post on X, Centcom indicated that these strikes were a direct response to several assaults on US personnel in Syria that occurred over the previous 24 hours, attributed to "Iranian backed groups."
General Michael Erik Kurilla, the commander of Centcom, emphasized that Washington's actions were intended to convey a "clear" message to the militants supported by Tehran. He stated, “Attacks against US and coalition partners in the region will not be tolerated,” criticizing the assaults on US forces in Syria as “reckless.”
Centcom noted that the strikes conducted on Monday targeted nine locations across two sites in Syria, asserting that "These strikes will degrade the Iranian-backed groups’ ability to plan and launch future attacks."
Currently, approximately 900 US troops are stationed in Syria, alongside around 2,500 in neighboring Iraq, with the military presence aimed at assisting local security forces in thwarting the resurgence of the Islamic State terrorist organization, formerly recognized as ISIS.
While Centcom did not disclose the specific armed groups targeted in the retaliatory strikes or report any casualties, the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has alleged that four Syrian members of Iran-backed groups were killed and ten others were severely injured in an attack described as an “international coalition” operation in the Al Mayadeen area of eastern Syria’s Deir Al Zor region.
