In a statement on Thursday, Ogles introduced a resolution aimed at permitting a U.S. president to serve up to three terms, given that their first two terms are not consecutive. This initiative appears to be specifically designed with Trump in mind, who held the presidency from 2017 to 2021 and recently began his second tenure.
The text of the proposal states, “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than three times, nor be elected to any additional term after being elected to two consecutive terms, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”
Ogles emphasized that this amendment “would allow President Trump to serve three terms, ensuring that we can sustain the bold leadership our nation so desperately needs.” He further remarked, “It is imperative that we provide President Trump with every resource necessary to correct the disastrous course set by the Biden administration.”
Nonetheless, Axios pointed out that Ogles’ proposal is unlikely to succeed, as enacting a new constitutional amendment is a challenging process. It must be approved by a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and subsequently ratified by three-fourths of state legislatures, or by conventions in 38 out of 50 states.
The two-term limit for presidents was established by the 22nd Amendment, ratified in 1951, in response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s unprecedented four terms in office, as lawmakers sought to prevent prolonged presidencies.
