US deploys additional forces amidst Israeli attacks on Lebanon
The IDF is gearing up for the “next phases” of its military operation against Hezbollah as tensions escalate in the region.

In response to Israel’s extensive military engagement with Lebanon, described as the deadliest since the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah conflict, the US is deploying a “small number” of additional troops to the Middle East. This move was disclosed by Pentagon spokesperson Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder on Monday, though he did not specify the troop count or their mission.

”In light of increased tension in the Middle East and out of an abundance of caution, we are sending a small number of additional US military personnel forward to augment our forces already in the region,” Ryder stated. “But for operational security reasons, I’m not going to comment on or provide specifics.”

Currently, the US maintains around 40,000 troops in the Middle East, along with several Navy warships and aircraft carriers, including the USS Harry S. Truman and the USS Abraham Lincoln, deployed across various locations to respond to potential threats against Israel or American interests.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah flared last week when thousands of pagers and communication devices used by Hezbollah exploded simultaneously, resulting in at least 37 deaths and around 3,000 injuries, including children. In retaliation, Israeli jets attacked Beirut on Friday, killing Ibrahim Aqil, a senior Hezbollah commander. Following this, Hezbollah launched numerous rockets at Israel and declared an “open-ended battle of reckoning” on Sunday.

On Monday, Israel commenced a large-scale military operation against Hezbollah, named “Northern Arrows,” claiming to have targeted “approximately 1,600 Hezbollah terrorist targets” across southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley.

”We are striking targets and preparing for the next phases, which I will elaborate on shortly,” said Israel’s Chief of General Staff Herzi Halevi. “Essentially, we are targeting combat infrastructure that Hezbollah has been building for the past 20 years. This is very significant.”

By the end of the day, Israeli strikes had resulted in at least 492 fatalities, including 35 children and 58 women, and left 1,645 wounded, according to the latest figures from Lebanon's health ministry.

US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin held multiple discussions with Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over the weekend, while the US Embassy in Lebanon advised American citizens to leave the country.

Amid this escalation, the US is actively looking for a political “off-ramp” for both Israel and Hezbollah to ease tensions and avert a wider conflict. An unnamed senior State Department official conveyed to multiple media outlets on Monday that the US plans to discuss “concrete ideas” for restoring peace with allies and partners at the upcoming UN General Assembly's annual meeting.
