The UN General Assembly has approved a resolution advocating for an unconditional ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, aiming to bring an end to the ongoing war that has lasted 14 months.
In a vote conducted on Wednesday, the non-binding resolution was passed with 158 votes in favor, 9 against, and 13 abstentions. It calls for “an immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire,” and requests “the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.”
This action by the General Assembly followed the US veto of a similar resolution in the UN Security Council last month. The US had argued against endorsing a proposal that was not directly connected to the release of all remaining Israeli hostages held by Hamas. During Wednesday's vote, Ambassador Robert Wood emphasized the American position, describing the resolution as “shameful and wrong.”
Wood stated, “At a time when Hamas is feeling isolated due to the ceasefire in Lebanon, the draft resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza risks sending a dangerous message to Hamas that there’s no need to negotiate or release the hostages,” in his address to the General Assembly.
Israel’s representative, Danny Danon, contended that an unconditional ceasefire would mainly benefit Hamas. He remarked, “The vote today is not a vote for compassion. It is a vote for complicity.”
According to Hamas-run authorities, nearly 45,000 Palestinians have died in Gaza due to Israeli military actions since October 2023. The UN has repeatedly highlighted the severe humanitarian crisis affecting the densely populated Palestinian territory. Muhannad Hadi, the organization’s Middle East peace coordinator, noted in a statement to the Security Council last month, “as winter approaches, the horror in Gaza continues to grind on with no end in sight.”
Israel has maintained that its military operations in Gaza will persist until all hostages are freed and the threats posed to the Israeli state by Hamas and its allied groups have been neutralized.
The conflict commenced on October 7, 2023, following a surprise attack by Hamas on Israeli cities that resulted in approximately 1,200 fatalities and over 250 abductions. Israeli officials report that around 100 hostages are still being held.
