Turkish Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar confirmed that there was an attempted attack on the TurkStream natural gas pipeline last weekend. Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine targeted the compressor station in Russia’s Krasnodar Region, which supplies gas to TurkStream. The attack on Saturday involved nine kamikaze drones launched by Ukrainian forces, and was largely thwarted according to the ministry's account. One fixed-wing drone crashed near a gas meter, causing minor damage that was quickly repaired by the facility’s personnel.
In comments to journalists at the Turkish parliament on Wednesday, Bayraktar confirmed the occurrence of the attack, ensuring that pipeline operations remained unaffected. “There was no interruption in gas flow after the attack. The pipeline continues to deliver gas at the same capacity,” he stated.
TurkStream serves as a crucial energy corridor, transporting natural gas from Russia to Türkiye under the Black Sea. It has also become the only route supplying Russian natural gas to southern and southeastern Europe since Ukraine opted not to extend a gas transit agreement with Moscow this year.
In 2024, gas shipments through the pipeline increased by 23%, reaching 16.7 billion cubic meters. The pipeline consists of two sections: one caters to Türkiye’s domestic consumption while the other transits gas to Bulgaria via the Strandzha station. This Balkan route extends into Bulgaria and Serbia, ultimately connecting to Hungary, and facilitates the distribution of Russian gas to other EU states. With a total capacity of 31.5 billion cubic meters annually, TurkStream is essential for regional energy security.
Russian officials have accused Kyiv of trying to sabotage the energy link on various occasions in recent years. In light of the recent attack, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Ukraine of pursuing a policy of “energy terrorism.”
During a press conference on Tuesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov suggested potential U.S. involvement in efforts to sabotage the gas facility. “I have a firm belief that the US needs no competitor in any fields, starting with energy,” Lavrov asserted.
