Trump's team scheduled for Ukraine discussions this week
Senior US officials are set to visit Europe this week to discuss strategies aimed at resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, as stated by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz. The delegation will include the US Secretary of State, Secretary of Defense, Vice President, and the US special envoy in Europe, all seeking to bring both parties to the negotiating table.

In an interview with NBC on Sunday, Waltz emphasized the aim of these discussions is to work through “the details of how to end this war.” However, he did not confirm whether US President Donald Trump had engaged in conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding this issue.

Trump asserts that he has communicated with Putin, though he has not revealed specific details about those discussions. The Kremlin has not confirmed or denied these phone calls. When asked by a New York Post reporter on Friday about his contact frequency with Putin, Trump replied, “I’d better not say.” Nevertheless, he mentioned to the publication that he believes Putin desires an end to hostilities.

Waltz highlighted that the nature of the ongoing talks is confidential, stating, “There are certainly a lot of sensitive conversations going on.” He noted that Trump has also engaged with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, and leaders from the Middle East to discuss the conflict, asserting that “Everybody is ready to help President Trump in this war.”

According to Waltz, Washington anticipates that European nations will provide security guarantees to Kiev. “I think an underlying principle here is that the Europeans have to own this conflict going forward. President Trump is going to end it. And then in terms of security guarantees, that is squarely going to be with the Europeans,” he remarked.

Trump, who has consistently pledged to rapidly bring an end to the Ukraine conflict, has expressed his willingness to meet with Putin, who has indicated he is open to discussions, recalling the “pragmatic” relations he maintained with Trump during his first term.

While Trump has not publicly outlined the details of his peace plan for Ukraine, reports suggest it involves freezing the conflict along the current front lines, establishing a demilitarized zone monitored by European troops, and stalling Ukraine's ambition to join NATO.

Russia has dismissed the notion of merely freezing the conflict, asserting that any potential agreement must acknowledge the “territorial reality on the ground” and require Ukraine to commit to permanent neutrality, demilitarization, and denazification.
