Upon arriving in the Senate chamber, Vance's tie-breaking vote solidified Hegseth’s endorsement. Notably, Republican Senators Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell diverged from party lines, voting alongside Democrats against Hegseth's confirmation.
Hegseth, who authored a book advocating for a revival of “warrior culture,” has committed to enhancing the military's combat readiness and prestige. During his confirmation hearing earlier this month, he stated his intentions to focus on “warfighting, lethality, meritocracy, standards, and readiness.”
President Donald Trump expressed confidence in Hegseth, declaring he will be “a courageous and patriotic champion of our ‘Peace through Strength’ policy.”
However, Hegseth’s nomination faced scrutiny due to allegations of sexual assault and excessive drinking. He dismissed these claims as “anonymous false claims” aimed at damaging his reputation.
Critics also contended that Hegseth does not possess the requisite experience to lead the Pentagon. Following the vote, McConnell emphasized that Hegseth had not presented “a strategic vision” for addressing America’s adversaries.
In defense of his nomination, Hegseth asserted that he is the right choice to reform the military, stating, “It’s time to give someone with dust on his boots the helm. A change agent,” during his remarks to the Senate.
