During an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson at a campaign event in Arizona on Thursday, Trump was asked about the potential involvement of Kennedy or Musk in his administration should he be reelected on November 5.
“Yeah, I do. I think so,” Trump replied, although he noted that Musk has expressed a desire to avoid secretarial positions and prefers focusing on reducing government spending.
“He thinks he can cut $2 trillion without affecting anybody, and I think he can do it,” Trump stated. “He wants to cut costs, he wants to save the country.”
Musk, who initially claimed political neutrality, officially endorsed Trump earlier this year and has since become a prominent supporter of the former president’s campaign for a second term. Trump has assured Musk that he would create a special “government efficiency” commission, called DOGE, which Musk would lead if Trump wins.
At a recent Trump campaign event in New York, Musk mentioned that he could potentially trim the federal budget by “at least $2 trillion,” pointing out that taxpayer money was being “wasted.”
As for Kennedy, Trump shared with Carlson that he envisions the former Democrat—who recently ran as an independent before withdrawing and endorsing Trump—to focus on health issues and “take care” of the U.S. population.
“He’s right with so much of the things he’s talking about, because you know, we’re not a healthy country,” Trump remarked.
Earlier this week, Kennedy confirmed that Trump had promised him a position in his administration, asserting that while he would not lead any government agencies, he would likely serve as a senior adviser involved in agency appointments.
Howard Lutnic, co-chair of Trump's transition team, also clarified on Wednesday that Kennedy would not oversee the Health and Human Services department if Trump is reelected.
Trump previously praised Kennedy for his longstanding advocacy for the health of American families and children and indicated plans to form a “panel of top experts” to investigate the causes behind the persistent rise in chronic health issues and childhood diseases in the U.S.
