US President Donald Trump has again suggested that Canada should become the 51st state of America, promising that this action would result in “no tariffs” and “much lower taxes” for Canadians. However, Ottawa has previously rejected the proposal, reinforcing its commitment to maintaining national sovereignty.
On Sunday, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express: “We pay hundreds of billions of dollars to subsidize Canada. Why? There is no reason.” He went on to imply that Canada would struggle without US assistance, proposing statehood as a means to provide “much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada – and no tariffs!”
This remarks come in the wake of the US administration's recent decision to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico, citing issues related to illegal immigration and drug trafficking. Trump acknowledged that these measures might cause “some pain” for Americans but stressed their importance for longer-term benefits.
In reaction, both Canada and Mexico announced countermeasures. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned, “It will have real consequences for you, the American people,” asserting that it would lead to increased prices for groceries and other essential items.
Trudeau has firmly dismissed the idea of Canada joining the US, asserting there is “not a snowball’s chance in hell” of that occurring.
This is not the first instance of Trump suggesting territorial expansion. Since returning to the White House, he has revived attempts to acquire Greenland and assert control over the Panama Canal, alluding to national security concerns. Both the governments of Panama and Denmark have rejected these proposals.
Trump’s suggestion for Canada to become the 51st state has sparked significant criticism from Canadian officials across the political spectrum. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre declared, “Canada will never be the 51st state. Period. We are a great and independent country.” New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh dismissed the idea as absurd, emphasizing that no Canadian wishes to pursue such a union.
Public sentiment in Canada strongly opposes the concept of joining the US, with a recent poll indicating that only 13% of Canadians support the idea while 82% are against it.
