Former US President Donald Trump has been reported to have secured a second term in office following confirmation of his victory in Wisconsin by state officials.
This win provided Trump with ten electoral college votes, pushing him past the necessary 270. He had declared victory hours earlier, forecasting that he would also win the popular vote once all ballots are counted.
Wisconsin emerged as one of the pivotal battleground states during this election, capable of swinging in favor of either candidate. The outcomes in several of these key states are instrumental in determining the overall election winner. As per the nation’s electoral system, all electoral votes from a state are awarded to the candidate who wins that state.
Trump previously won Wisconsin in 2016 against Hillary Clinton but lost it to Joe Biden in the 2020 election. Both Trump and Democratic candidate Kamala Harris concentrated significant efforts on campaigning in the state.
Harris, who currently serves as vice president in the Biden administration, is anticipated to address her supporters later today.
Numerous leaders have already extended their congratulations to Trump, including British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, among others.
On Wednesday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov mentioned that he was unaware of whether President Vladimir Putin would extend congratulations to Trump, noting that for Russia, the US is "a deeply unfriendly nation that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state."
