New US President Donald Trump indicated he still had “half a day” to secure a diplomatic resolution to the Ukraine crisis after being reminded of his campaign pledge to end the fighting within 24 hours of his return to the White House.
During his inauguration day, journalists inquired about his ability to fulfill that promise. Trump responded, “Well, it’s only half a day. I have another half a day left. We will see,” while seated at his desk in the Oval Office.
He reaffirmed his openness to meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to explore a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis. “We are going to try and get it done as quickly as possible. You know, the war with Ukraine and Russia should have never started,” he stated.
Trump also mentioned that he “got along with [Putin] great” during his first term, adding, “I would hope he wants to make a deal.”
Marco Rubio, Trump’s choice for US Secretary of State, acknowledged on Monday that he could not predict when the fighting between Moscow and Kiev will conclude. However, he emphasized that both sides would need to make concessions “something” for a resolution.
Putin welcomed Trump’s expressed desire to restore dialogue between the US and Russia while congratulating him on his inauguration. The Russian leadership noted the new US leader's and his team's statements regarding the intent to reestablish direct contacts with Russia—which had been halted by the previous administration—and their commitment “to do everything to prevent world war three,” as highlighted by Putin.
He further stated that Moscow is dedicated to its principles, asserting that dialogue should be founded on an “equal and mutually respectful basis.”
