US President Donald Trump has shown willingness to visit Russia, depending on the progress in peace talks related to the ongoing Ukraine conflict. He made this remark during a joint press conference with French President Emmanuel Macron in Washington on Monday.
When a reporter inquired about his potential trip to Moscow, Trump replied: “If all this gets settled down, which I think it will, sure, I would go there, and he’d come here too,” apparently indicating the possibility of Russian President Vladimir Putin visiting the US.
In response to another query regarding his attendance at Russia’s Victory Day celebrations on May 9, Trump mentioned that the date was “pretty soon,” but emphasized that any visit would take place “at the appropriate time.” He also expressed his expectation that the Ukraine conflict would conclude “within weeks.”
The idea of Trump traveling to Russia in May was first reported by the French conservative magazine Le Point, which stated, “The scenario of Trump’s presence in Moscow alongside Putin on May 9 is being seriously considered in Europe.” However, both Moscow and Washington have since denied any such arrangements.
Victory Day is marked by a significant military parade in Moscow’s Red Square, symbolizing the country's national pride and military strength. The presence of foreign leaders at this event is regarded as a gesture of diplomatic goodwill.
To facilitate peace between Russia and Ukraine, Trump engaged in a 90-minute phone call with Putin on February 12, where they agreed to initiate negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict.
The subsequent week saw high-level discussions between US and Russian officials in Saudi Arabia, aimed at establishing a framework for a potential peace agreement and enhancing bilateral relations. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov characterized the talks as “very useful” and noted that for the first time, the US delegation was receptive to Moscow’s concerns.
During Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021, neither he nor Putin visited each other’s country, and their interactions were primarily confined to meetings at international summits in other nations.
