In a recent statement, Trump remarked on the behavior of the Obamas, stating, “They're getting personal all night, these people,” while discussing Barack and Michelle Obama.

On Wednesday, Former President Donald Trump responded to the sharp critiques delivered by Barack and Michelle Obama at the Democratic National Convention, describing their comments as personal in nature and using them to justify his own retaliatory rhetoric.

"Did you see Barack Hussein Obama last night taking little shots? He was taking shots at your president and so was Michelle," Trump declared during a campaign rally in Asheboro, North Carolina. "You know, they always say, 'Sir, please stick to policy, don’t get personal,' but they’re getting personal all night, these people."

At the rally, Trump engaged the audience by asking whether he should respond in kind: “Should I get personal, or should I not get personal?” The crowd's overwhelming cheers seemed to favor a personal response.

The Obamas had delivered fiery speeches the previous night, critiquing Trump's presidency and breaking away from their previous ethos of "going high" in the face of attacks, opting instead for sharp and forceful rhetoric.

"Going small is petty, it’s unhealthy, and, quite frankly, it’s unpresidential," Michelle Obama told an energized crowd. "It’s his same old con: doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better."

During his speech, Barack Obama also took a pointed jab at Trump, hinting at Trump’s insecurities about crowd sizes in a moment that visibly excited the audience.

This shift in tone by the Democrats has been noticeable as they react more openly and directly to Trump post-2016 election, with campaign communications that are increasingly candid and critical of their opponents.

Trump is known for his lack of restraint in making personal attacks against both Democrats and Republicans, often labeling them with derogatory nicknames and spreading misleading claims. Recently, he referred to Vice-Presidential candidate Kamala Harris as "Comrade Kamala," implying she is a Marxist.

Trump also used the rally to continue a longstanding insinuation about Barack Obama, invoking his middle name "Hussein" to fuel baseless speculation about his religious identity.

In addition to targeting the Obamas, Trump criticized President Joe Biden for his recent vacation, saying, "People don’t want to see you in a bathing suit," a remark made after Biden criticized Trump's America-first rhetoric in his own DNC address.
